Multi-Modal Integration

colortheorymixture.jpg As discussed in the feature binding section, different features within the same modality are linked together in order to form a coherent representation of a stimulus. However, not only do features within a modality need to be linked, but information across modalities are also integrated in a fashion that allows for a coherent and comprehensive representation of the stimulus. Sometimes these multi-modal integrations are beneficial, and sometimes they create confusing and sometimes nonsensical interactions, as in synaesthesia and the McGurk Effect. Check out the links below for specific multi-modal interactions.
