  • Initial pedigree analyses support a single gene X-linked dominant trait
  • Skewed female to male ratio. Females have synesthesia over males with a ratio of 6:1
  • Absense of male to male tranmission
  • Significant linkage to the 2q24 chromosome
  • Chromosomes 5q33, 6p12, and 12p12 are all suggested to be influential in inheriting synesthesia
  • Greater than 40% prevalence among 1st degree relatives of synesthetes
